Shoe Tree In The Desert

All photos by Barry Schwartz

Maggie and I are driving back to Los Angeles from Phoenix last month and decide to take a more northern, less direct route to get home.

Within a couple of hours of leaving Phoenix, we’re past the small towns and mostly have the two-lane road to ourselves. There is a railroad track to our right. That’s about it for marks of humanity.  After awhile, not even a phone signal.  A beautiful, hot, cloudless day.

Moving right along at speed, as one does on long, straight roads, we see something: shoes – large numbers of shoes – hung on an L-shaped fence next to the road.  We double back and pull over.
